NASCAR driver Kyle Busch, aged 41, passed away due to severe pneumonia that led to sepsis, as confirmed by his family. Dr. Cedric Rutland, a pulmonary critical care physician and spokesperson for the American Lung Association, explained how pneumonia’s inflammation and infection can significantly impact the body.
Kyle’s son, Brexton Busch, returned to the racetrack for the first time since his father’s death, practicing at Charlotte Motor Speedway for the CookOut Summer Shootout, a Legend Car Series race. Busch’s unexpected death occurred late last month after his pneumonia escalated into sepsis.
A private memorial service for Busch was held, with plans for a public memorial later this year. Kyle Busch, known for driving the No. 7 HendrickCars.com Chevrolet, was celebrated with a statement from his family, Richard Childress Racing, and NASCAR, expressing their devastation at his passing.
“Our entire NASCAR family is heartbroken by the loss of Kyle Busch. A future Hall of Famer, Kyle was a rare talent, one who comes along once in a generation. He was fierce and passionate, immensely skilled, and cared deeply about the sport and its fans,” the statement read.
Bush was a two-time NASCAR Cup Series Champion, with his career spanning from 2004 and encompassing 762 career starts and 63 wins. He secured championship titles in 2015 and 2019 and had a total of 234 victories across all three NASCAR national series.
Kyle holds all-time records for wins in both the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series (102) and the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series (69). His final NASCAR win came shortly before his death, leading 147 laps to victory at Dover.
Following his death, Richard Childress Racing announced it would suspend the use of Busch’s No. 8, reserving it for Brexton when eligible for NASCAR racing. Brexton, 11, is an emerging racer, having participated in events with his father, including the Tulsa Shootout earlier this year.
Samantha Busch, Kyle’s wife, has been actively sharing their family’s racing experiences on social media. As Brexton continues to mature in racing, he could join the Truck Series at age 16. The family’s passion for the sport is evident, with Brexton following in his father’s footsteps.
