Dear Carolyn,
Since moving in with my girlfriend this summer, I’ve noticed the significant role her parents play in her daily life. Our relationship is going well, but this aspect surprises me.
For some background, she’s 29 and lived with her parents until she was 27 to save money during grad school. Their close relationship makes sense given these circumstances. Yet, it’s been challenging when she brings up her mother’s opinion on personal matters when I wasn’t aware she’d discussed them with her.
I want to talk to her about establishing a communication style that’s more typical among couples living independently. I seek advice on how to approach this conversation with sensitivity and understanding, without undermining her bond with them.
