NBA Season Preview: Awards Predictions

1 day ago 0

The NBA season is approaching fast. We have witnessed some preseason action, but reviewing every team’s offseason for the NBA, similar to the MLB and NFL analyses, isn’t feasible. Basketball remains my top sport despite criticisms. The NBA stands out with nine seasons without a repeat champion and eight consecutive years with different titleholders.

MVP Contenders

Recently, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander clinched the MVP award for two consecutive seasons. The last to achieve three wins in a row was Larry Bird from 1983-1986. Considering this, his chances for another MVP seem slim.

Victor Wembanyama, a promising young player, demonstrated potential last year, though his odds at +210 are unappealing. Nikola Jokic, a consistent finalist, boasts an impressive record, averaging a triple-double over two seasons. Despite lacking an MVP in these seasons, his +500 odds might offer a worthwhile bet.

For longer shots, Anthony Edwards at +1800 and Cade Cunningham at +2200 emerge as intriguing options. Edwards excels with the Timberwolves, leading them consistently to the playoffs. If they reach the top three in the West, his dynamic presence could sway MVP voters. Cunningham is pivotal for the Pistons, driving them to last year’s top spot in the East. Improved performance may earn him the recognition he deserves.

Being a long shot, Cooper Flagg could surprise at +20000, particularly if the Mavericks secure a top-four spot in the West. Jalen Brunson, at +5000, might focus on personal awards after winning the championship last season. Although the Knicks may retreat this season, Brunson remains a conceivable contender.

Rookie of the Year Prospects

The NBA Draft proceeded predictably with AJ Dybantsa, Darryn Peterson, Cam Boozer, and Caleb Wilson as top picks, reminiscent of the 2003 Draft’s significance.

Dybantsa’s role with the Wizards seems limited initially. Boozer isn’t expected to revive Memphis significantly. Peterson, likely a key scorer for the Jazz, presents a promising candidate. Wilson, holding a prominent position, might struggle with shooting, hindering his award chances.

Darius Acuff Jr. promises substantial stats but may falter defensively. Keaton Wagler, at +3500, offers an appealing long shot option. For a favored choice, Peterson at +340 deserves consideration.

6th Man of the Year

Among contenders for 6th Man of the Year, DeMar DeRozan stands out at +1800. His role off Denver’s bench maximizes his midrange prowess. He can significantly contribute during critical game phases when key players rest, including game-winning moments.

Many other awards exist, such as Most Improved Player or Defensive Player of the Year. Most Improved requires patience for better insights as established players often take this title upon remarkable growth. Victor Wembanyama, despite his defensive skills, might not justify betting for Defensive Player of the Year.
