4 weeks ago 0

Neal McDonough recently opened up about a challenging phase in his life and career. In an interview with Fox News Digital, the 60-year-old actor discussed his role in the Jimmy Stewart biopic, “Jimmy,” and reflected on a period when he believed his acting career was finished.

“What time is the bar open? That was generally my thought process back then,” he explained. McDonough was speaking about being fired from a show for not participating in a kissing scene with a co-star. This decision led many in Hollywood to label him as overly religious, making it difficult for him to find work.

Though McDonough admitted he was a regular drinker, the situation took a toll on him, worsening his alcohol problem. He faced financial ruin, losing his house and cars during this period.

Currently starring in “Jimmy,” which honors Jimmy Stewart’s life, McDonough shared insights into one of his darkest periods. During this time, his friend, the late actor Luke Perry, offered support. Perry allowed McDonough and his family to stay in his home after they lost theirs.

The “Desperate Housewives” star reflected on his feelings of failure toward his family, saying his focus on material possessions led to personal suffering. His wife, Ruve, played a crucial role in his recovery. She challenged him to choose between his family and alcohol, leading him to quit drinking.

“It’s just a cold, hard fact that God gave me an amazing woman,” McDonough stated. His wife became his support, and now, they work together as producers, collaborating on projects like “Boon,” “The Warrant: Breaker’s Law,” and more.

McDonough’s life took a positive turn, enabling him to work on meaningful projects. Celebrating Jimmy Stewart’s birthday this year became particularly significant for him. Playing Stewart’s father in the biopic allowed McDonough to gain a deeper understanding of Stewart’s life and struggles.

“Because Ruve and I got to see who Jimmy Stewart was, read all about Jimmy, what he had gone through,” he said, expressing appreciation for being part of the project.
