Neil Bush Supports Democratic Candidate James Talarico in Texas Senate Race

1 hour ago 0

Neil Bush, brother of former President George W. Bush, has publicly shared his decision to vote for Democratic candidate James Talarico in the U.S. Senate race in Texas. He described President Donald Trump’s attempts to overturn the 2020 election as an attack on democratic institutions.

Bush, a prominent Texas businessman, made his voting choice known through a Facebook post on Tuesday. By choosing Talarico, he expressed disapproval of Republican candidate Ken Paxton. Bush, aged 71 and son of the former Republican President George H. W. Bush, currently chairs his father’s nonprofit, Points of Light.

He explained his decision, stating, “I have been a Republican for most of my life, but character matters more than party affiliation.” He expressed concern over Paxton’s actions as Texas Attorney General, particularly his efforts to challenge the 2020 election results to benefit Donald Trump. Bush condemned these actions as a threat to democratic principles and the peaceful transition of power.

Talarico’s campaign is closely watched, with polls showing a narrow lead over Paxton. A victory for Talarico would mark the first time a Democrat has won a statewide race in Texas in 32 years. Despite tight polls in past crucial Texas votes, Democrats have yet to secure victories.

Bush also pointed out Paxton’s impeachment by the Republican-controlled Texas House, followed by his acquittal by the Texas Senate. However, Bush emphasized that his support for Talarico extends beyond Paxton’s controversies.

Though he has never met Talarico, Bush expressed admiration for his approach to addressing complicated and divisive issues. He stated, “He speaks with respect, seeks common ground, and seems genuinely interested in bringing people together. His faith appears to be a deeply rooted source of humility, compassion, and conviction.”

Bush praised qualities he values in public servants: integrity, civility, humility, and a readiness to listen to dissenting views. He sees Talarico as a principled, pragmatic leader committed to serving rather than wielding power.

Bush concluded by highlighting the need for leaders who respect democratic institutions, value truth, accept accountability, and strive for unity. “Today, I voted against a style of politics that I believe has damaged our country. More importantly, I voted for the kind of character and leadership I hope will help heal it.”
