O.J. Simpson Excluded from Buffalo Bills’ New Stadium Wall of Fame

O.J. Simpson, a former running back for the Buffalo Bills, will not be featured at the team’s new stadium. The facility, which cost $2.1 billion and took three years to complete, recently celebrated its opening. Although the Wall of Fame at Highmark Stadium honors team legends, Simpson’s name is noticeably absent.

Pete Guelli, president of business operations for the Bills, expressed that Simpson is not considered appropriate for inclusion within the stadium. Simpson, the No. 1 draft pick in 1969, spent nine seasons with the Bills out of his eleven-year NFL career. He made history as the first player to rush for over 2,000 yards in a single season and was regarded as the era’s top running back.

Simpson’s career transitioned to broadcasting after retirement. However, his legacy took a turn in the 1990s when he faced legal troubles. In 1994, his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman were murdered, leading to suspicion surrounding Simpson. When police sought to question him, they noted a trail of blood leading to his home from his car.

Simpson’s refusal to cooperate resulted in murder charges and an infamous car chase across Southern California in a white Ford Bronco. Though acquitted during the 1995 criminal trial, labeled the “Trial of the Century,” many believed his wealth contributed to the outcome. Some pointed to alleged racism within the LAPD as a factor.

While Simpson wasn’t convicted for the murders, he was found liable in a civil suit brought by Goldman’s father. His reputation suffered further damage in 2008 when convicted of armed robbery in Las Vegas, claiming he intended to retrieve his stolen memorabilia. Sentenced to nine to 33 years, he served the minimum before parole.

Simpson passed away from cancer at 76, leaving behind a complicated legacy.
