Yorkville’s Joel Castillo: A Story of Recovery and Football Success

1 hour ago 0

Joel Castillo from Yorkville knows how fortunate he was to survive a car accident last March on Interstate 88. Even more remarkable is his return to playing football this fall. Castillo, standing at 5-foot-9 and weighing 167 pounds, plays as a wide receiver and kick returner for the Foxes. He recovered from his injuries without missing a beat.

“I was driving home from a workout in Chicago when a tire went through my windshield,” Castillo explained. “I’m here by the grace of God. We’re both here.” His passenger, Lincoln Ijams, a friend and player at Butler, joined Castillo for the workout. They were both in the car when the incident occurred. “The other car was on the fast lane towards Chicago while I was on the opposite fast lane,” Castillo recalled. “The tire came off, and we both emerged almost unscathed, though there was a lot of glass and bleeding.”

Castillo did suffer injuries. He lost a front tooth, fractured his jaw, and endured a severe concussion. These injuries impacted his schooling and summer football preparation. “I was out for a couple of months with neck, body, and back problems,” Castillo noted.

Despite these setbacks, Castillo returned to the field. He smiled broadly after a key role in Yorkville’s 21-7 victory over Oswego East. His 96-yard kickoff return for a touchdown opened the second half, breaking a scoreless tie. He also made a crucial 22-yard catch on fourth-and-13 and caught another pass for the final touchdown. “Coach told me to reach the sticks on the fourth-down play, and that’s what I did,” he stated. “They had coverage on me, but I thrive in those moments.”

Yorkville coach Dan McGuire praised Castillo, “He’s explosive and a valuable asset for us. He deserves credit for his performance.” This 2026 season, Castillo leads Yorkville with 29 receptions for 498 yards and three touchdowns. His kick returns total 375 yards.

Playing football at a higher level remains his dream. “It’s been my dream since starting football at age 6. My recruiting opportunities diminished a bit, but finishing the season strong is my current focus,” Castillo shared.

Lincoln Ijams contacted Castillo’s mother, Holly, after the accident before the police arrived. “It’s the scariest call you’ll receive,” Holly said, “And then learning what happened? It’s one of the most bizarre incidents. For both to walk away with what I consider minor injuries, it’s amazing.”

Eight college visits were initially planned, but only one happened due to recovery and medical appointments. Castillo requires a permanent dental bridge post-football season. His honor roll status was preserved with the help of Coach McGuire, who ensured his junior year completion.

Joel Castillo expressed gratitude for the opportunity to play this season, despite the challenges faced. He’s training with a renowned trainer. “My motto is: ‘If you want to be the best, train with the best.’ It’s been a challenging journey, and I am extremely grateful for the chance to compete again this season.”
