The Philadelphia Phillies have solidified their commitment to Don Mattingly by appointing him as their full-time manager. This decision follows the mid-season dismissal of Rob Thomson and the interim appointment of Mattingly. With Mattingly at the helm, the Phillies saw a significant shift in their performance, turning their season around despite a narrow escape from a late-season collapse. However, they were defeated by the Atlanta Braves in the National League Wild Card Series.
Mattingly, affectionately known as ‘Donnie Baseball,’ demonstrated his capabilities in the clubhouse. His leadership led to the team winning 73 out of 118 games after beginning with a 9-19 record under Thomson. Despite losing five of their last 15 games, the Phillies saw enough potential to remove the interim tag, signing Mattingly to a two-year contract.
Mattingly’s connection to the team extends beyond the dugout, as his son, Preston, serves as the general manager. This appointment marks Mattingly’s third managerial role, having previously managed the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Miami Marlins. His career in professional baseball, which began in 1979, includes a stint as the bench coach for the Toronto Blue Jays during their successful 2025 season.
Despite not yet capturing a World Series title, Mattingly’s experience remains a valuable asset to the Phillies. The team retains a strong core, with players like Bryce Harper, Trea Turner, and Kyle Schwarber. Aaron Nola and Christopher Sanchez also remain under contract, providing a foundation for future success.
The Phillies have seen an era of potential, marked by Harper’s MVP win in 2021. However, since losing the World Series in 2022, their progress has been incremental, with losses in subsequent NLCS and NLDS games and this year’s Wild Card. Under Mattingly, the organization aims to build on these experiences for continued growth and success.
