Link Between Sleep and Weight
Cutting back on sleep regularly might cause weight gain. A study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine supports this claim.
The study involved 95 adults, initially at risk for heart or metabolic diseases. Researchers compared six weeks of adequate sleep to six weeks of reducing sleep by approximately 90 minutes per night.
Participants gained about one pound and slightly larger waist sizes after restricted sleep periods. Staying physically active remained constant, but more time was spent sitting.
Despite the weight gain, no significant changes in body fat or muscle mass were found. The study didn’t track dietary intake, leaving the source of weight gain unclear.
Sleep’s Role in Metabolism
Dr. Somi Javaid, a thought leader not involved in the study, highlighted sleep’s role in metabolic regulation. Chronic sleep deprivation disrupts weight management.
Javaid noted, “During menopause, women can experience sleep issues, affecting their ability to manage weight.” Sleep disturbance during this stage of life poses added challenges.
The American Heart Association lists sleep among “Life’s Essential 8” for heart health, recommending 7-9 hours of rest per night.
Javaid stresses treating sleep as a “vital sign of health,” not as a lifestyle choice.
Research Limitations
The study’s findings link sleep deprivation with weight gain, yet limitations exist.
The six-week duration may have been insufficient to observe meaningful changes in body fat. Hormone measurements occurred solely in the morning, ignoring daily variations.
The small sample size hindered comparison between participant groups.
The study suggests regular sleep loss may contribute to weight gain but calls for more extended research for comprehensive insights.
