Poor Sixth Inning Ends White Sox’s Lead Against Astros

Chicago White Sox pitcher Davis Martin engaged in an unusual play by picking up a baseball near the mound and throwing it to second base in the top of the sixth inning against the Houston Astros. Initially ruled a double play, reviews showed that batter Isaac Paredes was hit by a pitch. Therefore, instead of two outs, the Astros had runners on first and second with no outs.

The misjudged play led to a dramatic shift in the game. Entering the sixth, the Sox held a 5-0 lead. Houston then scored eight runs in the inning, overturning the Sox’s advantage to lead 9-5 by the time the inning ended at Rate Field.

Manager Will Venable commented, “Just couldn’t get any outs.” He praised the Astros for their effective gameplay, remarking, “They did a good job putting the ball in play… A good lineup and just beat us in every single way that inning.”

The inning began with Jose Altuve’s single, loading the bases for LaMonte Wade Jr., whose single brought in a run. Christian Walker then hit a three-run double, narrowing the Sox lead to 5-4. Reliever Bryan Hudson faced a tough inning, striking out Lucas Spence but conceding a two-run homer to Cam Smith, putting Houston ahead 6-5.

The Astros continued their offensive to load the bases again, resulting in Altuve getting an RBI with an infield hit against Seranthony Domínguez. Wade drew a bases-loaded walk, extending their lead to 8-5.

Postgame, Martin expressed his frustration, attributing the inning’s issues to poor execution. “It’s unacceptable,” said Martin. “The tone-setting of the sixth inning was really bad on my part, which kind of leads to the bigger inning.” He emphasized the need for him and fellow pitchers Hudson and Domínguez to stop the scoring surge.

The defeat featured strong performances by Braden Montgomery, who secured three hits, marking a career-high. Despite this setback, the first-place Sox (54-48) stayed 1½ games ahead of Cleveland (54-51) in the American League Central, benefiting from the Guardians’ 11-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays.

Throughout the game, four Sox batters were hit by Astros pitchers, contributing to a three-run first inning after Spencer Arrighetti plunked Meidroth with the bases loaded. In subsequent innings, Chase Meidroth provided an RBI double during a two-run fifth inning against Kai-Wei Teng, setting the score to 5-0.

Venable reflected on missed opportunities, stating, “We did have opportunities there… Just weren’t able to capitalize. Today five runs weren’t enough.” The offensive faltered, finishing 2-for-16 with runners in scoring position.

The disheartening sixth inning showcased the most runs the Sox have conceded in an inning this year. Martin pitched five-plus innings, surrendering four runs on six hits while striking out three. However, Hudson, typically a reliable reliever, conceded four runs in two-thirds of an inning.

Martin maintained an optimistic view of his performance, “The process was really good. I’m really happy with the stuff… I’m really excited about that.” He expressed eagerness to continue improving and emphasized the importance of “finish[ing] off innings and empty[ing] the tank a little better.”
