Cory Soller, co-chair of Michigan City Pride, remains undeterred by statements from Indiana’s leaders as Pride month continues. Despite Governor Mike Braun’s declaration of June as ‘nuclear family month,’ Soller emphasizes the spirit of inclusion evident at Michigan City Pride Fest. ‘To those celebrating Pride month, specific labels do not matter,’ Soller stated. He highlights a contrast between building bridges and erecting walls.
In his Twitter/X post, Gov. Braun linked the role of families to the future of Indiana and the country. However, LGBTQ+ activists and leaders viewed the timing as an affront, aiming to distract from pressing issues like rising costs of living. Approximately 18% of Indiana families fit the ‘nuclear family’ definition, which means more than 80% do not, including diverse family structures within the LGBTQ+ community.
Michigan City Pride Fest, a family-friendly event, invites all family types. ‘We are building bridges, welcoming nuclear families, and creating inclusiveness,’ said Soller. The event takes place on June 13 at Guy Foreman Amphitheatre.
Democratic Party Chairwoman Karen Tallian and others, such as Leah Peksenak, president of Northwest Indiana Pridefest, question the proclamation. They see it as a distraction from the critical issues confronting Indiana residents. Peksenak cites the lack of necessity for dominant culture celebrations like a straight pride month.
Northwest Indiana Pridefest happens on June 6 and 7 at Valparaiso’s Sunset Hill Farm County Park. Peksenak points to studies indicating that supportive family environments benefit children, irrespective of parents’ genders or marital status.
Zoe O’Haillen-Berne of Indiana Youth Group emphasizes the harm inflicted on youth by such proclamations, particularly during Pride month. She stresses the importance of providing safe and welcoming spaces for all family structures and community members.
Statements from LGBTQ+ Outreach of Porter County’s board of directors express concern over the timing and implications of the governor’s proclamation. They emphasize diversity as a strength and call for policies that celebrate varying family structures.
