Protesters in France are demonstrating in Paris and nationwide, ignoring police prohibitions on gatherings in the capital. The Paris Police Prefecture has denied several requests for permits to protest, citing past riots that resulted in arrests and violent clashes with law enforcement.
The authorities argue that these protests pose a significant risk to public institutions and safety. They are particularly concerned about actions against buildings and services that could destabilize the country’s foundations, as explained in an official police order translated by Fox News Digital.
Authorities’ Response
President Emmanuel Macron attributes the unrest to ‘ultra-left groups’ aiming to disrupt the Republic. In an effort to prevent further disturbances, over 70,000 police officers have been mobilized.
Despite restrictions, members of the Yellow Vest movement attempted to rally at Place de la Concorde. Security concerns led to the arrest of prominent members, including spokesperson Azelma Sigaux and group member Benjamin Ball.
Nationwide Demonstrations
The Interior Ministry anticipated protests involving 170,000 people across the country, marking four consecutive weeks of demonstrations. Tear gas and detentions were reported as police responded to rioters amidst fires in the capital. Protesters allegedly threw projectiles at officers during these events.
Adding to the unrest, student and teacher unions have joined forces with the Yellow Vests, highlighting issues like high living costs. Established since mid-September, these protests see continued participation from both students and union members.
Government and Union Interactions
In response, French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu is scheduled to meet union leaders to discuss wages and purchasing power. Unions, however, remain firm in their demands, planning new strikes for Tuesday to pressure the government further.
Since these protests began, Marine Le Pen, National Assembly Deputy Leader, has seen a rise in polling. Her popularity surged after announcing her candidacy for the presidential election, indicating a potential runoff.
