Quick-Thinking Boater Saves Woman from Alligator Attack in Florida

A woman from Florida suffered a harrowing alligator attack on Saturday, but a nearby boater’s swift actions likely saved her life. She was swimming with a group in the Silver River near Ocala when an alligator approached. Attempting to defend herself with a paddle, the alligator seized her right arm and pulled her underwater.

John Gamache, who was lunching on his boat with his father, heard the disturbance. “I looked just upriver from us a couple hundred feet and saw an alligator head way above the water and going full speed towards the swimmers,” Gamache told FOX 35 Orlando. He quickly navigated his boat toward them, which drove the alligator away.

When Gamache reached the woman, he encountered a severe injury, with bones exposed and significant bleeding. “It was a terrible injury, bones poking out, blood everywhere. Obviously, the minutes mattered,” he stressed. Utilizing rope from his boat, Gamache tied off the injured arm while his father assisted in moving the remaining swimmers, including children, onto the boat.

They hurried to a nearby boat launch where emergency responders awaited. The woman’s family informed FOX 35 on Sunday that she survived, got released from the hospital, and is recovering at home, though she lost her right arm.

Gamache, a frequent visitor to Silver Springs, was shocked by the incident, stating, “They called earlier, and we talked for a while, and it was heartwarming to hear them explain their emotions. We’re glad that it happened as good as it could have. Like the result is just the sustained injury and nothing more.” Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation officers captured and removed the nearly 10-foot alligator later. On Sunday, they reopened the area.

Unfortunately, this incident closely follows a fatal attack in early July. Brittany Clark, 31, lost her life to an alligator while hiking near Orlando. She and her companions entered the Econlockhatchee River to cool off, where an alligator attacked her. Despite efforts from her boyfriend, Chance Allison, to rescue her, Clark succumbed to her injuries before reaching the hospital.
