Residents File Nuisance Complaint Over Hollywood Sign Tourism

45 minutes ago 0

On June 10, 2026, crowds gathered at Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles to enjoy the sunset with the Hollywood sign as a backdrop. However, this iconic site has become a source of significant concern for local residents.

Residents living near the Hollywood sign have filed a public nuisance complaint. They claim tourist activities have degraded the area into a ‘public toilet.’ Several Hollywood Hills residents submitted the complaint in Los Angeles Superior Court against the city, Mayor Karen Bass, and City Councilwoman Nithya Raman.

According to California state law, a public nuisance is defined as any condition injurious to health, offensive to the senses, or an obstruction to the free use of property.

Illegal vending, street dumping, public urination, and defecation on city property are cited in the complaint. Residents also point to increased traffic, cigarette smoking despite fire hazards, and the potential for fires obstructed by traffic congestion.

Residents argue the city is responsible as it promotes the area to tourists without managing the impact, leading to numerous safety risks and nuisance conditions.

The area has been plagued with safety and quality-of-life concerns for residents due to tourist influx, noted in the complaint.

Chuck Suhayda, a former board member of the Hollywood United Neighborhood Council, highlighted similar issues from 20 years ago. The area’s roads lack sidewalks and average 18 feet in width, making them vulnerable to congestion.

In September 2011, Council District 4 staff cleared a lookout site for the Hollywood sign to promote tourism, intensifying congestion. This area, restricted by geography, is designated for single-family homes but is inundated with tourists.

Documents from the city acknowledge the situation’s unsustainability, but residents believe officials overlook the role of promoting Lake Hollywood Park and related sites.
