The opening match of the World Cup in Mexico City witnessed an unusual occurrence in international soccer: three players were sent off with red cards. This level of ejections has not been seen in a World Cup match since 2006 when Portugal faced the Netherlands, and four players received red cards. That game set a World Cup record.
The 2022 World Cup in Qatar had only four red cards throughout the entire tournament. However, at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, the game saw both Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane sent off for South Africa and César Montes for the host nation, Mexico.
This marks the first World Cup opener where three players were dismissed with straight red cards, as none of the players were shown two yellow cards before their expulsions. Mexico secured a 2-0 victory in the match.
Sithole received his red card after a challenge on Brian Gutierrez at the start of the second half. South Africa’s situation worsened when Zwane was expelled after a video review showed he struck Roberto Alvarado in the face in the 84th minute. In stoppage time, Montes was shown a red card for a foul on Khuliso Mudau.
As a result of their red cards, Sithole, Zwane, and Montes will miss at least one match. South Africa is set to play against the Czech Republic next, while Mexico will face South Korea in Guadalajara.
The 2006 World Cup match between Portugal and the Netherlands is infamous for its four red cards, two for each team, and a total of 16 yellow cards handed out during the game in Nuremberg.
