Reactions to National Anthem Renditions and Controversies

Greg Gutfeld and his panel on ‘Gutfeld!’ analyzed Martha Reeves’ recent performance of the national anthem at a Women’s Pro Baseball League game. Her rendition drew criticism from some quarters. This highlights the significance of words, as much as actions, in today’s society.

In another incident, France experienced controversy over their national anthem during an NFL game featuring the Pittsburgh Steelers and New Orleans Saints. The civil unrest in France intensified reactions to this event. French citizens showed anger over the changes made to the anthem’s lyrics, linking it to immigrant issues in the country.

Before the game, singer Nina Tonji sang ‘La Marseillaise’ with altered lyrics at the Stade de France. While she received applause, there was substantial online criticism. Tonji replaced ‘Qu’un sang impur abreuve nos sillons!’ with ‘Qu’un sang uni abreuve nos sillons!’. This change was seen as having political implications.

‘Qu’un sang impur abreuve nos sillons’ translates to ‘May impure blood water our furrows/fields.’

In the original revolutionary context of ‘La Marseillaise’, ‘impure blood’ referred to enemies and traitors, especially immigrants allied with foreign powers. By using ‘uni’ (united), Tonji shifted the song’s meaning to national unity that includes immigrants. This lyrical change transformed the anthem’s tone from exclusion to inclusion.

Tonji, a Montreal-born artist, drew attention from substantial media platforms due to her rendition. Platforms such as Cerfia, RMC Sport, and Francetvsport shared the performance with millions of followers, sparking debates online. Although some defended the change, many criticized her actions, labeling them scandalous, disrespectful, and controversial.

The NFL’s handling of national anthem performances often invites scrutiny, showing a need for consistent standards. The league has the option to require artists to adhere to original lyrics by signing binding contracts. This way, artistic interpretations can be maintained without altering the lyrics, thereby avoiding controversies.

The league could benefit from this approach in maintaining a focus on sports and avoiding public relations challenges related to anthem performances.

Armando Salguero, as a Senior NFL Writer, covers related topics extensively, sharing insights on social media and other platforms.
