Republican National Committee Challenges New Jersey on Voter Roll Errors

The Republican National Committee (RNC) is intensifying its dispute with New Jersey election officials. The committee is demanding access to voter roll records, focusing on noncitizens registered to vote in the state. Legal action is on the table if these requests are not met.

Formal violation notices under the National Voter Registration Act were sent to New Jersey’s Secretary of State and officials in six counties, including Bergen and Essex. The RNC seeks documents related to noncitizen removals and efforts to maintain accurate voter rolls by September 15.

Democrat Governor Mikie Sherrill confirmed what our records show: noncitizens appear on New Jersey’s voter lists, stated RNC Chairman Joe Gruters. Election officials must provide these records to explain the situation, or face potential lawsuits.

An investigation revealed that a software glitch in New Jersey’s Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) mistakenly registered around 6,600 noncitizens. Approximately 400 of these individuals reportedly voted. The RNC noted that Bergen County alone removed 134 noncitizens from the voter rolls this year, most linked to the MVC issue.

Governor Sherrill’s administration disclosed that between June 2023 and June 2024, this error registered thousands of noncitizens. Despite these errors, around 5,100 were removed after determining they lacked separate registration documentation.

Of note, approximately 340 people improperly registered voted, and another 220 had previous registrations that might validate their voting status. County officials have directives to resolve outstanding issues before the November election.

Governor Sherrill has criticized federal efforts under the Trump administration to obtain nonpublic voter data, suggesting these moves aim for greater federal oversight rather than state solutions. The investigation into the MVC error is ongoing according to her office.
