Seven villagers have been trapped in a cave in central Laos since last week, following an attempt to find gold. Unexpected heavy rain caused flash flooding, blocking their exit. The situation has prompted intensive rescue efforts from both Laos and Thai teams.
The incident occurred in Xaisomboun province on May 19. One individual managed to escape before the exit was sealed and informed local authorities. The condition of the trapped individuals is still unknown.
Bounkham Luanglath, head of Laos’ Rescue Volunteer for People, emphasized that the cave is a narrow chamber frequently visited by locals seeking gold. Authorities have issued multiple warnings about entering due to safety risks. He expressed the urgency of the rescue mission currently underway.
Thai rescuers arrived at the scene by Sunday, as reported by state-run Lao National Radio. Divers are actively exploring flooded sections to reach the trapped group.
The Laos Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not provided any statements. In Laos, a one-party communist state, governmental information is often tightly controlled.
