Residents Return Home as Firefighters Contain Hawk Fire in Nevada

Approximately 9,000 individuals have been authorized to return to their homes in the Reno, Nevada area as firefighters advanced in controlling a significant wildfire caused by human activity. The fire has destroyed over 40 homes.

Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam announced at a news conference that around 5,000 people remained evacuated due to the Hawk Fire, which ignited on Saturday and rapidly expanded. By early afternoon, residents east of State Route 395 were allowed to go back home. The west side of the highway experienced the most substantial damage.

The wildfire has scorched 15,067 acres and was reported to be 27% contained by Tuesday afternoon. Remarkably, no fatalities have been discovered or reported in connection with the fire, according to Richard Edwards, the fire chief with Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District.

“I think it’s incredible that we’ve not had a fatality in this fire, given how fast it’s moved,” Edwards commented.

Since its inception on Saturday, the fire has traversed 6 miles within 24 hours. The fire’s origin remains under investigation, but it is suspected to have been caused by human actions. Whether the initiation was deliberate or accidental is still unclear, Sheriff Balaam noted.

“We can say that because of where it occurred,” Balaam stated. “It was in the middle of nowhere, there was no lightning strikes, there was nothing else that could have caused this fire.”

Despite progress in firefighting efforts, Edwards warned of critical fire weather conditions expected to begin on Wednesday and persist through the weekend. He urged the public to practice caution.

“Please be careful,” he said. “All of these fires, these large fires that we’ve incurred over the last two-and-a-half weeks, which — human-caused — that means they’re preventable.”
