Russia Strikes Kyiv; Civilians Killed Amid Escalating Tensions

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russia launched a prolonged drone and missile assault on Kyiv, causing multiple civilian casualties. The overnight attack left at least 20 dead and numerous injuries, marking Moscow’s response to Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil facilities.

Explosions resonated throughout the night, leading many to seek shelter in subway stations after air raid alerts. With morning, emergency teams were searching through destroyed residential buildings for survivors.

“The deadly strike is a response to Ukraine’s actions,” Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed, linking the attack to Ukraine’s long-range strikes that have strained Russia’s fuel supplies. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has described these strikes as an effort to bring Putin to negotiations.

Recent diplomatic efforts, led by the Trump administration, have not ended the conflict. Analysts suggest Putin believes the military and political pressure will weaken Ukraine and its Western allies.

Ukraine Suffers Losses Amid Night-long Attack

The head of the Kyiv City Administration, Tymur Tkachenko, reported 20 fatalities due to the assault. Mayor Vitali Klitschko stated that over 90 people were injured. In reaction, Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha referred to the night as horrifying.

Damage spanned 30 sites across the city, impacting both residential areas and civilian infrastructure. Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko noted 20 damaged residential buildings. Desnianskyi district saw occupants trapped in a multi-story complex, while a collapse occurred in another district.

While Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov insisted targets were military-related, repeated incidents have hit civilian locales. The United Nations cites over 16,000 civilian deaths in Ukraine due to ongoing hostilities.

Appeals for Enhanced Air Defense

The assault employed advanced precision weaponry, targeting Kyiv’s military and energy facilities. Ukraine’s defense systems, especially against drones, have advanced, but ballistic threats persist.

Ukrainian officials continue to urge international partners for additional air defense systems, particularly the Patriot missile system. Foreign Minister Sybiha emphasized Ukraine’s right to self-defense, dismissing Russian justifications of retaliation.

The civilian toll is feared to increase, as indicated by messages from Sybiha on X.

Ukrainian Forces Target Russian Infrastructure

In retaliation, Ukraine struck a major oil refinery in Russia, igniting a fire, alongside targeting a strategic railway bridge in Luhansk, used by Russian military forces.
