Sam Neill’s Final Days Before His Passing

Sam Neill, a prominent actor from New Zealand, contracted pneumonia ahead of his death on Monday. This was revealed by his co-star, Rima Te Wiata. She acted alongside Neill in the 2016 comedy “Hunt for the Wilderpeople.” In a conversation with the New Zealand Herald, Te Wiata expressed that Neill showed no fear of death but would have been “annoyed” by it. She shared, “For goodness sake, I got over my cancer, and now look, now I get pneumonia. What next?” She also commented, “He’s on his big journey now.” Details regarding when Neill was affected by pneumonia were not provided.

Neill’s family disclosed his passing at the age of 78, declaring the loss was sudden and unexpected. They highlighted that Neill was cancer-free at the time. In his memoir “Did I Ever Tell You This?” released in 2023, Neill wrote about his battle with stage-three non-Hodgkin lymphoma, but stated he was cancer-free as of April, following intense treatment.

Sam Neill is widely known for his portrayal of paleontologist Alan Grant in “Jurassic Park” (1993), sharing the screen with Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, and Richard Attenborough. Laura Dern paid tribute via Instagram, describing him as a “beloved lifetime friend,” saying, “I will love you forever, Dr. Alan Grant.” Jeff Goldblum simply remarked, “The next great adventure begins.” Director Steven Spielberg shared his admiration for their collaboration on Jurassic movies, assuring Neill will remain unforgettable to fans worldwide.

Laura Tingle, journalist and former partner to Neill, told ABC Radio Sydney about his deteriorating health, saying his body became too exhausted to sustain. She stated, “he’s been pretty sick for the last couple of weeks,” and added, “he’d had a lot of chemo and a lot of immunotherapy.” Tingle highlighted that although he overcame his blood cancer, his immune system was left severely weakened.

Neill’s career included over 150 screen appearances, notable ones being “The Hunt for Red October,” “The Piano,” “Event Horizon,” and “Merlin.” In the 2010s, he featured in the British drama “Peaky Blinders.” Co-star Cillian Murphy expressed admiration and affection, recalling Neill as “one of the kindest, funniest and gentlest people, and one of the finest actors.” Nicole Kidman also praised Neill’s legacy, recalling their early acquaintance and his supportive nature, calling him “charming, kind, funny and intelligent.”

Born in Omagh, Northern Ireland, in 1947, Neill moved to New Zealand with his family in the early 1950s. He was knighted within the New Zealand royal honors in 2022, marking a distinguished career.
