Interior Secretary Doug Burgum has reacted strongly to ongoing vandalism issues at the National Mall, specifically targeting the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. He described recent damage as significant, including a lengthy gash and graffiti expressing anti-Trump sentiments.

Burgum emphasized the seriousness of these acts, stating, “When people are attacking the Reflecting Pool, it is like an attack on our country. These are our most sacred monuments, and those responsible will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.”

Restoration and Security Measures

Restoration efforts are underway for the Reflecting Pool following the damaging incidents. Seven arrests have been made, and security has been increased at these historic sites. Authorities have issued multiple citations and filed 18 police reports related to the vandalism.

Burgum highlighted the damage done to the pool’s industrial rubber liner, reportedly cut with a box cutter. He connected these actions to a larger effort to undermine the nation, labeling them as targeted attacks on important monuments.

White House Response and Further Actions

The White House condemned the vandalism as “targeted sabotage”. Despite the efforts for the restoration, repairs have been delayed, extending past the July 4 celebrations. A security fence now encircles the Reflecting Pool as part of the ongoing investigations.

President Donald Trump spoke out against the vandalism, stating it was a deliberate attack designed to disrupt the improvements made to the nation’s capital. He stressed the importance of safeguarding the country’s history.

Enhancements Ahead of National Celebrations

Burgum reaffirmed the commitment to revitalizing the capital’s landmarks. Over 50 parks, 48 monuments, 22 fountains, and 1,700 lights have undergone restoration in preparation for America’s 250th anniversary.
