Serena Williams made an unexpected return to Wimbledon, participating in singles competition. Unfortunately, she lost in the opening round to Maya Joint and sustained a knee injury. Despite this, Williams attempted to play doubles with her sister, Venus Williams.
Ultimately, she had to withdraw from the doubles match. On July 4, Williams, 44, expressed her disappointment on Instagram, stating, “I’m heartbroken to have to withdraw from doubles. Coming back to compete again has been a gift, and the opportunity to play alongside @venuswilliams once more meant the world to me. I did everything I could to be ready, but unfortunately my knee just isn’t ready to compete.”
Williams also shared images of syringes used to drain fluid from her knee, highlighting the severity of her injury. However, two weeks later she posted a TikTok video showing her dancing with improved spirits, captioned, “Looks like my knee is getting better. Finally!”
This summer, there has been widespread speculation that Williams intended to utilize the grass season to prepare for the US Open. Her last appearance was at the 2022 US Open in both singles and doubles with Venus, after which she took an extended break from the sport.
Williams returned officially to professional tennis at the HSBC Championships in June, partnering with Victoria Mboko in doubles. The following week, she teamed up with Karolina Muchova at the Berlin Tennis Open.
The 2026 US Open draw remains weeks away from announcement, leaving uncertainty about Williams’ participation. It appears that her knee condition may not be the main factor affecting her decision to compete.
