Shooting Rampage in Central Israel

An attack carried out by a Palestinian man with Israeli citizenship occurred across several towns in central Israel on Sunday. The attack resulted in the death of one person, while five others were injured, according to Israeli police reports.

Police apprehended the attacker, who was killed during their intervention. Originally, there was a concern about multiple attackers due to the number of locations involved. These concerns echoed the Hamas-led assaults in October 2023. However, authorities confirmed that the attack was perpetrated by a lone gunman and his accomplice.

Sequence of Events

Rescue services Magen David Adom responded to initial shooting reports at a gas station near Kokhav Yair around 10:30 a.m. The town lies on the Israeli side bordering the West Bank. Subsequent reports emerged from Tsur Natan, Tsur Yitzhak, and near the Israeli settlement Sal’it in the West Bank.

During the police operation, a second person was arrested later on Sunday. This individual attempted to attack officers with a glass bottle, but no injuries were reported. Further investigations are underway.

Israel’s Channel 12 highlighted the attacker’s method: he remained in his vehicle while firing shots, allowing rapid movement between locations.

Impact on the Community

A 35-year-old man was killed in Kokhav Yair. One injured individual sought refuge in a McDonald’s, leaving blood-soaked clothing near the entrance. Overall, five individuals were wounded — two severely, three with moderate injuries — according to Magen David Adom. Initially, rescue services reported six injuries amid post-attack chaos.

Local authorities urged residents to stay indoors. Schools imposed a lockdown, keeping children for at least three hours, based on the regional council’s guidance.

“Since Oct. 7, the scenario we were expecting was terrorist crossing into our towns from over the boundary; I don’t think that anyone imagined that we would discover the attackers were Israeli citizens,” Oshrit Gani Gonen, regional council head, responded to Israeli media.

Official Responses

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu commended the security forces’ swift actions. The public security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, also praised their efficiency. In a video posted on X, Ben-Gvir displayed himself beside what seemed to be the blurred body of the attacker, asserting swift justice against terrorists.

Ben-Gvir was criticized by other leaders for controversial videos intended to rally conservative support before the upcoming legislative election.

Background and Tensions

Tension remains elevated in Israel and the West Bank, intensified by conflicts beginning in October 2023. Hamas fighters invaded southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, resulting in over 1,200 Israeli deaths and 251 hostages taken. Israel’s counter-offensive led to over 72,000 Palestinian deaths, including civilians and fighters, as reported by the Gaza Health Ministry.

On the same day as the attack, an Israeli airstrike in Gaza killed four Palestinians. The strike hit Khan Younis, targeting a police location, according to the Palestinian Red Crescent. Ten more individuals were wounded, with casualties taken to a field hospital.

The Israeli military withheld immediate comments on the airstrike but has previously emphasized action against threats.
