Republican voters in South Dakota will head to the polls on Tuesday for an important gubernatorial primary runoff. The race features Gov. Larry Rhoden, a Republican, competing against GOP businessman Toby Doeden. Neither candidate managed to capture more than 50% of the votes in the June 2 primary, making this runoff necessary.
Governor Rhoden stepped into office following the promotion of former Homeland Security official Kristi Noem by President Trump. In the initial primary, Rhoden trailed Doeden by 5 percentage points. This result poses a significant challenge for the current governor as Tuesday approaches.
Despite South Dakota’s strong Republican presence, President Trump has not commented on this electoral race. Voters have until 8 p.m. EDT to cast their ballots.
