South Dakota’s GOP Resilience Amid National Democratic Gains

32 minutes ago 0

While Democrats saw significant victories across the nation, South Dakota maintained its status as a Republican stronghold. Governor Ron DeSantis highlighted his state’s achievements in navigating political challenges, claiming that bold conservative policies helped Florida withstand nationwide Democratic progress during the midterm elections.

On election night, Republican Larry Rhoden secured the gubernatorial position with approximately 63.5% of the vote. His performance closely mirrored that of President Donald Trump in 2024, who garnered 63.4% of the votes. This victory, along with the Republican dominance in other statewide races, ensured the GOP retained overwhelming control in the legislature, despite Democrats gaining four seats.

Rhoden faced off against Dan Ahlers, a self-proclaimed “conservative Democrat” who campaigned on issues like affordability, rural healthcare, and education. However, Ahlers’ campaign failed to significantly reduce the Republican stronghold, ending with just 36.5% of the vote.

South Dakota’s election results presented a stark contrast compared to other traditionally Republican states. Both Idaho and Wyoming saw their Republican gubernatorial candidates win, but with diminished vote shares compared to Trump’s 2024 success. In contrast, South Dakota’s results were largely stable.

“Republicans who lost failed to align their promises with their actions,” said South Dakota GOP House Majority Leader Scott Odenbach. “Our leadership ensured consistency between our commitments and actions.”

David Jolly, the Democratic nominee for governor in Florida, ran a campaign similar to Ahlers’, focusing on affordability and healthcare. He reduced the GOP’s vote share to 50%. Meanwhile, the Democratic nominee in Tennessee also caused a notable reduction in Republican margins with a similar approach.

Despite the Democrats’ limited overall success in South Dakota, they managed to flip four legislative seats in the Sioux Falls area. The city’s growing population and shifting political views offered new opportunities for Democrats, compounded by local opposition to large data-center developments.

South Dakota’s GOP success was attributed to addressing key public concerns through actionable solutions. Republican House Speaker Jon Hansen emphasized that real achievements, such as property tax reductions, utility cost management, and fiscal balance, were central to their victory. South Dakota remained economically stable with a 2% unemployment rate and a 4% average wage increase in 2025.

Republican Senator Mike Rounds triumphed with 60.5% of the vote. Even though the GOP was affected by the general national swing, the state’s Attorney General, Marty Jackley, secured the congressional seat with roughly 64% of the vote, a slight drop from Dusty Johnson’s 72% in 2024.

Despite some legislative shifts, South Dakota’s relatively minor losses stood out against significant Democratic gains in other Republican territories. Texas, Arizona, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Georgia, and Michigan all experienced Democrat takeovers in parts of their state legislatures.
