President Donald Trump has stirred curiosity just before the midterm elections by alluding to ‘big surprises’ with Russ Vought, the chief of the White House budget and a key figure in Project 2025. Trump provided no specifics at a Maryland event on Tuesday evening.
“We have some big surprises coming up in a few weeks, right Russ? He’s gonna be one of the important people in the history of our country,” Trump stated. This comment has led to broad conjecture about what might be on the horizon. Critics question whether Trump is planning actions that could influence the election results.
Jessica Tarlov, a political strategist for the Democratic Party and Fox News host, mused on X, “Between this and his ‘midterm surprise,’ the time to prepare for him to try to steal an election is now.” Joyce Vance, a lawyer and former U.S. attorney, remarked, “Election interference in the offing.”
Attention is also on Trump’s association with Vought. Former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci highlighted a contradiction. Scaramucci noted that Trump’s recent statements clash with earlier efforts during the 2024 campaign to distance himself from Project 2025 and its contributors. “Of course, he said in July 2024 he had nothing to do with Project 2025, and he didn’t know Russ,” Scaramucci pointed out.
Neither Trump nor the White House have clarified if the comments relate to the elections. Focus has turned to Vought’s responsibilities, which include federal spending and efforts to reshape government operations.
Matt Klink, a Republican strategist and president of Klink Campaigns, shared with Newsweek that Trump’s mention of a ‘midterm surprise’ is likely a strategic move to boost voter excitement rather than a specific plan. “Trump’s remarks about a ‘Midterm Surprise’ are spin, and the spin is the point,” observed Klink. “Trump tied the line to his Nebraska rally crowds and enthusiasm. That’s a turnout message, not a classified briefing.”
Newsweek has reached out to the White House, Office of Management and Budget, and America First Policy Institute for comment.
