Spokane Wildfire Causes Extensive Damage

A wildfire northwest of downtown Spokane, Washington, has caused significant destruction, affecting over 600 structures. Officials are actively assessing the extent of the damage caused by the fire, which covers an area of 5,390 acres as of Sunday. The information was shared by Benjamin Cossel from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, as reported to NBC News.

The fire smoke was visible across Spokane, Washington, on Saturday, as captured in photos by Tyler Vanwert via Reuters. Authorities have confirmed that more than 600 structures have been damaged; however, they haven’t yet specified how many of these are homes, businesses, or schools.

The wildfire incidents in Spokane are collectively referred to as the Spokane Area Fires. They are being managed as three separate incidents: the Old Trails Fire, the Fairview Fire, and the Autumn Lane Fire. Management of these fires has been taken over by the California Interagency Incident Management Teams, who arrived Saturday night. This federal agency is experienced in overseeing complex wildland-urban fires, where residential areas and other developments are at risk, as explained by team officials during an interview with the NBC affiliate KHQ of Spokane.

Evacuation zones will remain closed to ensure public safety until authorities determine that it is safe for residents to return. Verified social media posts shared by NBC News depict a local sports complex with smoke looming in the background before it was overtaken by flames.
