Steve Ballmer Accepts Responsibility for Kawhi Leonard Scandal

Steve Ballmer, owner of the Los Angeles Clippers, made his first public comment on social media since his one-year ban by the NBA. He acknowledged his responsibility for the Kawhi Leonard scandal and confirmed payment of a $30 million fine levied by the league.

Ballmer expressed his regrets on Twitter/X, stating, “This has been a very difficult time for everybody associated with the Clippers, and for that, I have sincere regrets.” He apologized to fans, employees, and fellow NBA team owners for the disruption caused by the incident, accepting responsibility as the team’s principal owner.

On September 2, the NBA charged the Clippers and Kawhi Leonard with violating its salary cap circumvention rules, which had been previously denied by those involved. Ballmer’s suspension from league and team activities resulted from allegations of his involvement in facilitating off-court income opportunities for Leonard.

“We are committing to put this chapter behind us,” Ballmer continued in his post. “We have communicated to the NBA that we are complying with the penalties assessed by the league, have paid the fine, and are moving forward.”

In addition to his own suspension, the NBA penalized other key figures within the Clippers organization. President of Business Operations Gillian Zucker faces a one-year suspension without pay, while President of Basketball Operations Lawrence Frank has been suspended without pay for six months. The league also revoked the Clippers’ first-round draft picks spanning from 2029 to 2033.

Ballmer emphasized, “The challenges ahead of us are significant, but so is our resolve. We will continue to build our team and invest in our community. The confidence of our fans is our priority.” He assured stakeholders that with a talented roster and dedicated staff, the Clippers aim to regain competitiveness and fan pride.

The league’s investigation, made public, detailed the connections between Leonard, the Clippers, and Aspiration. This led to Ballmer’s acceptance of responsibility for attempts to circumvent NBA salary cap rules.
