Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout began the 2026 MLB All-Star Game with a strikeout in his first appearance at bat. This marks Trout’s 12th All-Star game, held close to his birthplace in New Jersey. Despite this, the Angels struggled, entering the break in last place in the AL West. The franchise has not made the playoffs since 2014, a drought only surpassed by the Pittsburgh Pirates, who last qualified in 2015.

At the break, the Angels’ record stood at 38-59, presenting significant challenges for a playoff run. However, Trout mentioned that skepticism has motivated him. “I think the fuel of people doubting us makes it more of a fire for me to try to get back to the playoffs,” Trout told the Los Angeles Times. Nonetheless, before Tuesday’s All-Star Game, the three-time AL MVP expressed determination to succeed with the Angels. “Could I take the easy way out and just leave? Yeah,” Trout confessed. However, he emphasized his unresolved ambitions with the team.

The Angels need to overcome a 10-game deficit in the wild-card race or close an 11.5-game gap behind the leading Texas Rangers in the AL West for Trout’s playoff aspirations to materialize. His future remains committed to the Angels, owing to a record-breaking extension he signed in 2019 that includes a no-trade clause and extends through 2030. Injuries have hampered his career, but he maintained strong performance metrics, with 18 home runs in 78 of the 97 games played before the All-Star break.
