Sugary Drinks and Stomach Cancer Risk: New Insights

New research from Mass General Brigham reveals a significant link between sugary drinks and stomach cancer risk. Consuming one sugary drink daily may greatly increase this risk.

Researchers found that one or more sugary beverages per day nearly triples the risk of gastric cancer compared to consuming less than one per month. The study highlights that about 63% of U.S. adults drink sugar-sweetened beverages daily, according to CDC statistics.

This study builds on earlier research linking sugary drinks to liver, breast, and colorectal cancers. However, this study focuses specifically on their impact on gastric tissue.

Study Details

The study used data from over 100,000 participants from the Nurses’ Health Study and Health Professionals Follow-Up Study. It found that drinking at least one sugar-sweetened drink daily was linked to a 2.45-times higher risk of gastric cancer than drinking less than one per month. These cohort studies explored lifestyle, diet, and chronic disease among healthcare workers.

Implications and Further Research

The research underscores the role of sugary drinks and processed foods in rising cancer rates. Stomach cancer is largely associated with H. pylori bacteria. However, in a subset of participants, sugary drink consumption was associated with cancer risk independent of H. pylori presence. The effect was particularly strong among women consuming more than one sugary beverage daily.

Sugar-sweetened drinks include sodas, fruit punches, lemonade, and sports drinks. The primary sweetener, fructose, is linked to increased cancer risk. Interestingly, diet sodas and other low-calorie drinks did not show similar associations.

The study was observational and could not establish causation. Most participants were White healthcare professionals, and the results need validation in diverse populations. The research emphasizes the need for further studies.
