Taylor Farms has recalled over a dozen products, including salsa and guacamole, due to potential salmonella contamination. These products were sold at major retailers such as Walmart, Target, Whole Foods, Kroger, and Trader Joe’s. The recall affects items containing fresh jalapeños linked to salmonella risks.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that salmonella is a leading cause of foodborne illnesses in the U.S., causing hospitalizations and deaths. It is especially hazardous to young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems.
This recall follows a multistate salmonella outbreak connected to fresh jalapeños from Coast Citrus Distributors. Investigators from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and CDC identified a grower in Sinaloa, Mexico as the probable source. So far, 345 cases across 27 states have been reported, including 36 hospitalizations. There have been no deaths associated with this outbreak.
Taylor Farms has ceased sourcing from the implicated Sinaloa grower and is now using alternative suppliers. The affected products include jalapeño-based items primarily distributed to restaurants and sold wholesale.
Details of the Outbreak
The FDA reports infections began occurring between June 19 and July 20. Interviews with patients revealed that 93% had eaten at Mexican-style restaurants, including Chipotle Mexican Grill and QDOBA, within a particular period before falling ill.
Subsequently, both restaurants stopped serving the affected jalapeño peppers. The FDA and CDC have stated there is currently no active salmonella risk at these establishments. However, the investigation remains open, and officials urge businesses to check their inventory for contaminated jalapeños.
Cases of salmonella have been detected in several states, including Alabama, Arkansas, California, and others spread across the country.
