Teen Develops AI Website to Combat Food Waste

Seventeen-year-old Smit Kothari from Virginia has launched an AI-powered website called Grocery Genius. The platform aims to reduce food waste and hunger while also helping families save money. It allows users to enter ingredients they already have and generates recipe ideas. This innovative tool tracks pantry inventory, provides nutritional facts, and even offers health grades.

Inspiration Behind Grocery Genius

Kothari was motivated by observing his family struggle to create meals from random ingredients. He realized many families face the same challenge. “I did some research and found out that many other families have that same exact problem,” he told Fox & Friends.

Kothari created Grocery Genius with the aim to connect the problems of food waste and hunger.

The app generates three recipe ideas based on the entered food items, along with nutritional information and money-saving tips. It considers dietary restrictions and cooking abilities to tailor recipes.

Features of Grocery Genius

Grocery Genius includes a “Smart Pantry” feature to track food items and alert users before things expire. The website also enables meal planning and nutrient tracking, including calories and macros.

Christopher Tan, president and CEO of the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore, mentored Kothari during his development of Grocery Genius. Tan remarked on the app’s potential: “The beauty of this app is it has so many different applications that could help a number of families in need,” he told WVEC.

Kothari’s initiative is supported by his firsthand experiences. A trip to Africa inspired him deeply due to witnessing impoverished families struggling with hunger.

A Commitment to Improve

Kothari plans to continue improving Grocery Genius. “I’ve been getting lots of feedback from users, and I want to keep enhancing it,” he shared. The platform has garnered attention, winning second place in the national Congressional App Challenge, which promotes coding skills among students.

The website is free, and signing up requires just an email. This simplifies access to its features for anyone interested in managing their kitchen efficiently and donating food before it goes to waste.

As Kothari moves on to college, his dedication to further develop Grocery Genius remains strong. His efforts indicate an impactful future for addressing food waste challenges.
