Tension Between Knicks Owner and Mayor Leads to Watch Party Cancellation

2 weeks ago 0

Hours before Game 4 of the N.B.A. finals between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs, a brewing conflict between the Knicks’ owner and the mayor resulted in the cancellation of a watch party outside Madison Square Garden. The cancellation left many fans disappointed.

On Wednesday, Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced on X that James Dolan, the owner of the Knicks, had taken the initiative to cancel the event. He described Dolan’s decision as ‘breaking hearts across our city.’ Meanwhile, Dolan shifted the blame to the mayor and Jessica S. Tisch, the police commissioner. During a radio appearance on ‘The Craig Carton Show,’ Dolan criticized their decision, citing increased security measures around the arena on Monday.

Dolan accused Mamdani and Tisch of lacking experience and claimed they aimed to disrupt the team’s playoff journey. ‘This is about celebrating the Knicks at Madison Square Garden, at the Mecca of basketball,’ Dolan stated. ‘This is what the mayor’s office and the commissioner’s office is trying to kill. They don’t want the celebration.’

Earlier that day, a spokeswoman for the Police Department confirmed that the agency was ready to manage the security for the watch party and highlighted that the city had pre-approved the necessary permit.

This situation continues to unfold, prompting many to keep a close watch on further developments.
