The Impact of Mentorship for Fatherless Boys

On Father’s Day, Charles Blow reflects on the experience of growing up without a father. His parents separated when he was five, and his father’s struggle with alcoholism created a significant void. Blow hopes every boy lacking a father figure could experience similar support. The organization Son of a Saint in New Orleans exemplifies this mission by aiding boys whose fathers have passed away or are incarcerated. Founded in 2011 by Bivian “Sonny” Lee III, inspired by the loss of his own father, the group actively changes the lives of young boys.

This organization serves as a community hub, offering various programs to meet the boys’ needs. A visit to their headquarters showcases this, with activities like cooking classes and wellness sessions. These programs teach boys about mental health in a supportive environment.

Blow interviewed 16-year-old twins Michael and Robert, who lost their father three years ago. They shared joy from their experiences with the organization, such as attending summer camps funded by Son of a Saint. These young men, like many participants, celebrate Father’s Day with their mentors, who have played crucial roles in their lives.
