Thieves Steal Art from Renoir Museum in France

Authorities in France are on the hunt for two thieves who broke into a museum early Tuesday, stealing paintings by the famous French impressionist Auguste Renoir. According to Bryan Masson, the mayor of Cagnes-sur-Mer, the thieves escaped with four works of art but dropped one during their getaway.

“Spotted thanks to the town’s video surveillance cameras, the two individuals fled, abandoning one of the stolen paintings as they ran,” said Masson.

The estimated value of the stolen art is 9 million euros, approximately $10 million. It’s unclear if the figure covers all four paintings initially taken or just the three paintings that were successfully stolen. Masson did not specify which paintings were taken.

The museum’s alarm was activated at 5:48 a.m., prompting police to arrive at the scene within five minutes, as stated in a Facebook post by Masson. A photo captures a police officer stationed in front of the Musee Renoir’s entrance following the theft.

Both local and national police forces have been deployed to the site since the incident, with an active investigation underway. Masson commented:

“Attacking the Renoir Museum is attacking a part of the history and heritage of Cagnes-sur-Mer. These events are particularly serious.”

Masson further emphasized the necessity of implementing a comprehensive security plan for local museums and art collections. He pledged to allocate resources to enhance the protection of such heritage, belonging to the residents of Cagnes-sur-Mer.
