4 weeks ago 0

Lake Central senior first baseman Tyler Thuftedal is showing exceptional form at the plate. He acknowledges his slow start but feels he’s gaining confidence. Recently, Thuftedal has been making significant contributions.

In the Class 4A Crown Point Sectional opening round against Munster, Thuftedal excelled. In his playoff debut, the Calumet College recruit went 2-for-2 with two doubles, an RBI, and a run. Lake Central won 13-3 in five innings. He was even intentionally walked, a first for him, which surprised him given his previous struggles.

Sophomore Jacob Forystek also performed well, going 3-for-4 with an RBI, three runs, and two steals. Lake Central (22-8) will face Morton (7-13) in the semifinal. Batting seventh, Thuftedal raised his average to .215 after entering the game with three doubles this season.

Coach Mike Swartzentruber noted Thuftedal’s improvement. A sophomore was brought in to alternate at first base, which was a challenge Thuftedal handled well. The coach praised Thuftedal for his recent performance, especially as a key player in recent games. He acknowledged the impact of Thuftedal’s hits from the bottom of the order.

Last season ended poorly for Thuftedal due to a slipped disk. This season, rotating positions motivated him to become more aggressive at the plate. His determination led to improved performance, which his teammate, Brayden Walls, noticed, remarking on Thuftedal’s revitalized batting.

Munster (23-7) had a strong start, leading 3-0 in the first inning. Lake Central responded in the third with five runs. Key hits included a two-run single by Connor Friesema and Thuftedal’s run-scoring double. The fifth inning saw eight more runs, including a three-run homer by Walls.

Lake Central’s sophomore pitcher, Owen Kopercinski, steadied after a challenging first inning. He retired 10 straight batters and finished the game strong. Despite a previous loss to Munster, Lake Central has been dominant, going 14-2 since.

Coach Swartzentruber selected Kopercinski for his mental readiness, believing he could handle the pressure. The team’s momentum continues, but this victory holds special significance for Thuftedal, who described the game as exhilarating.
