The Toronto Marlies emerged victorious in the American Hockey League’s Calder Cup, defeating the Chicago Wolves 4-3 in Game 5 on Friday night. This victory marks the Marlies as the top affiliate of the NHL’s Maple Leafs. Vinni Lettieri contributed a crucial goal on a second-period power play.
During the second period, Benoit-Olivier Groulx and Jacob Quillan also found the net, further aiding the Marlies’ efforts. Landon Sim scored late in the first period, narrowing the early lead of the Wolves to 2-1. The goaltending of Artur Akhtyamov proved instrumental, as he made 27 saves. Akhtyamov’s performance was rewarded with the playoff MVP title, boasting a playoff record of 15-7, coupled with a 2.22 goals-against average and a .923 save percentage.
The Marlies previously clinched the Calder Cup in 2018, adding to their accolades. On the opposite side, Felix Unger Sörum was a standout for the Wolves, scoring twice and providing an assist. Josiah Slavin contributed to the scoreline, while Cayden Primeau managed 19 saves in goal.
The Wolves managed to stave off elimination in the best-of-seven series with a 4-3 overtime win the previous night. The Wolves have a history of success, with three Calder Cup wins to their credit.
