A tragic accident occurred in São Paulo State, Brazil, where a young woman died during a rope jumping activity. Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, a 21-year-old from Jandira, São Paulo, lost her life after instructors neglected to connect her to essential safety equipment. This incident took place at the Ponte do Esqueleto, also known as Skeleton Bridge, around 100 miles northwest of São Paulo, according to the Civil Police of the State of São Paulo.
The bridge, which has become a favored spot for rope jumping enthusiasts, stands approximately 30 meters, or just under 100 feet, above the ground, as noted in a police report reviewed by The New York Times. Rope jumping is often confused with bungee jumping but differs in the type of rope utilized. Bungee ropes are elastic, allowing for an up-and-down bounce, whereas rope jumping relies on a more rigid rope that swings when taut. Tragically, Ms. de Freitas was not secured to any rope during her jump.
Viral videos showcased the moment when Ms. de Freitas was hoisted above two instructors’ heads, her arms extended, before being thrown off the bridge. Notably, the two instructors were fitted with harnesses, seemingly connected to a rope, while a third individual assisted by holding her ankles before retreating as she was taken to the edge. Contrary to proper safety protocols, the clips on Ms. de Freitas’s harness were empty, as indicated by the videos.
A nurse attempted to revive Ms. de Freitas upon the police’s arrival, yet she exhibited no signs of life, according to the police report.
Authorities detained three individuals employed by the rope jumping service in connection with Ms. de Freitas’s death. The report detailed that two of them initially fled the scene post-interrogation but were later captured. The company lacked authorization to operate jumps from the bridge, as stated by Brazil’s Ministry of Management and Innovation in Public Services.
While Ms. de Freitas carried a GoPro-style camera during her jump, police stated that the device was not located at the scene. The instructors claimed ignorance regarding its location. Ms. de Freitas was laid to rest in São Paulo State on Sunday, as reported by The Associated Press.
