The Trump administration reached a significant milestone in immigration enforcement with federal authorities announcing over 10,000 suspected gang member arrests since President Donald Trump began his second term.
The arrests are part of a wider effort to crack down on violent criminals within U.S. communities, according to Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Charges against those arrested include murder, assault with a deadly weapon, drug trafficking, racketeering conspiracy, robbery, and extortion.
Efforts to Enhance Community Safety
Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin emphasized that the push by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) aligns with the administration’s goal of enhancing community safety. During a cabinet meeting at the White House on March 26, 2026, Mullin stated, “Under President Trump’s leadership, ICE has arrested more than 10,000 gang members. Many of these gang members were released into our country by Joe Biden.” He criticized these criminals for their violent actions against Americans.
Mullin highlighted the impact of the Secure America Act, noting its role in increasing ICE’s capacity to arrest gang members and criminals across American neighborhoods.
Milestone Arrest and Border Security
The 10,000th arrest featured Javier Hernandez Rosas, identified by DHS as an MS-13 gang member and an illegal immigrant from Mexico. Rosas’ criminal record includes cocaine possession, abduction, and weapons charges.
President Trump stated that tougher ICE enforcement is compelling violent criminal illegal immigrants to leave the U.S., with effects like reverse migration, foreign prison releases, and expanded metro raids.
Simultaneously, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reported reaching record staffing levels of 21,471 agents this spring, marking the highest number in the agency’s 102-year history. The administration prioritizes border security, and officials claim a drop in illegal immigration by more than 87% since October 2024.
