Trump Pushes for Attorney General Confirmation Amid Political Tensions

4 days ago 0

President Trump issued a stern warning to Senators Thom Tillis and John Cornyn, urging them to cease delaying the confirmation of Todd Blanche as attorney general. Trump threatened to pursue his proposed ‘anti-weaponization fund’ if the senators do not cooperate.

Tillis and Cornyn object to confirming Blanche unless Trump abandons his plans for the fund. The $1.8 billion initiative aims to support individuals who claim political persecution. It was introduced earlier this year as part of a settlement of Trump’s lawsuit against the IRS and the Treasury.

Trump stated that while the ‘anti-weaponization fund’ is currently off the table, he will keep Blanche in the role of acting attorney general and revive efforts to pass the fund if the two senators do not vote for Blanche.

“If Senators Cornyn and Tillis, both upset because I wouldn’t endorse them, aren’t going to approve Todd Blanche… then I will keep Todd as Acting A.G., and push hard to get the Anti-Weaponization Bill passed,” Trump declared on Truth Social.

During his confirmation hearing on July 15, Blanche confirmed the fund’s status as ‘dead’ and noted the settlement requires all parties to consent to any changes in writing. Senator Cornyn emphasized this requirement during the hearing.

“Has there been a written agreement of the parties to modify the settlement fund?” Cornyn inquired.

No, the settlement fund is just not moving forward,” Blanche replied, “There’s no modification. It never started. No money went from the Treasury to any other account.”

The Senate Judiciary Committee, which previously delayed a vote on Blanche’s nomination, announced a new vote set for Tuesday at 9 a.m. Chairman Chuck Grassley expressed his desire for Blanche’s successful confirmation, noting his strong record in law and order.

The Senate’s summer recess begins at the week’s end, resuming in mid-September.
