Trump’s Influence on 2020 Election Claims Continues to Affect GOP

The 2020 election remains a topic of discussion as President Trump focuses on it during the current midterm elections. Many Republican candidates, even those in close races, still support Trump’s unfounded claims about election fraud. However, some GOP voters are ready to progress beyond these assertions.

Georgia’s Mike Collins and 2020 Election Claims

In Georgia, Representative Mike Collins, the Republican Senate nominee, began his campaign shortly after Trump urged Georgia’s secretary of state to alter the 2020 election results. In a campaign ad, Collins falsely stated that Trump had won Georgia, expressing disdain for politicians who refuse to support Trump and address the 2020 election issues. The ad concluded with Collins shooting a gun into a container labeled “voting machine.”

Lynn, a lifelong Republican voter in Georgia, voiced concern over Collins’ focus on past election disputes. She is contemplating voting for Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff, partly due to Collins’ stance. The Collins campaign did not reply to NPR’s inquiries.

Austin Sapp, another Republican voter, believes in election fraud but desires that Trump move away from discussing 2020. Despite supporting measures like a strict voter ID law, Sapp criticizes the ongoing debate, urging a focus on future policies.

The Impact of Election Integrity Claims

Gabe Sterling, a Georgia election official, noted that only a small fraction of voters consider election integrity a primary concern. He observed that while the issue is prominent among media and political extremists, the general public has largely moved past it. Sterling, who has defended Georgia’s election integrity, found limited success in persuading voters during his primary run for secretary of state.

Meanwhile, some candidates elsewhere, like Michigan’s GOP Senate nominee Mike Rogers, have adopted Trump’s election fraud claims to gain his support, despite once criticizing them. According to Michigan strategist Jason Roe, candidates often echo these claims to appease party loyalists rather than out of genuine belief.

The Ongoing Influence on Election Dynamics

Although Trump’s focus on 2020 could harm Republican efforts to maintain majorities, he continues to influence candidate endorsements based on their support of his election claims. In Georgia, Trump refused to endorse a candidate preferred by Governor Brian Kemp due to their acknowledgment of Trump’s 2020 loss in the state. Similarly, in Texas, he endorsed the state attorney general over a potentially stronger general election contender.

Sterling suggests that Trump’s emphasis on elections distracts from other political issues. A University of California San Diego poll indicated that less than half of Americans expect upcoming elections to be fair and free from interference, reflecting persistent skepticism. If Republicans face defeats, claims of election fraud might regain prominence.
