Ed Sheeran Expresses Regret Amid Controversy Over Macklemore’s Tour Exit

Ed Sheeran showed deep emotion while addressing fans at his Saturday performance in Philadelphia. This marked his return to the stage following criticism over Macklemore’s removal from his tour. “I’m not surprised that this week’s criticism was about something much more important,” Sheeran said at the beginning of his concert at Lincoln Financial Field. “I’ve had to take and make challenging decisions, and I am making mistakes. I’m so sorry. I don’t want to disappoint fans.”

Sheeran then addressed the situation in Israel and Palestine. He clarified that his performance shouldn’t be seen as a political statement. “I’ve tried in my career not to be a political commentator of any kind, because I want my music and shows to be about unity, not division, about humanity, not politics.”

“But this is a humanitarian issue, and I cannot hide how I feel anymore. What happened in Israel at a music festival on Oct. 7 was horrific and compounded centuries of Jewish pain. What is happening in Gaza is catastrophic and unjustifiable and disproportionate.”

Sheeran shared that he is engaging with various perspectives to see how he can support the victims. He admitted he wasn’t certain how the audience would react. “I didn’t know if I would have things thrown at me,” he confessed, explaining changes to his usual show format to ensure his safety.

Pro-Palestinian protesters were present at the venue, expressing their views with signs and flags. Macklemore, known off-stage as Ben Haggerty, had been removed from Sheeran’s tour after controversy sparked by his “Free Palestine” remarks during his performance at MetLife Stadium.

Sheeran clarified on Tuesday that the decision to remove Macklemore was not his but was made by the concert promoters and venues. He expressed sorrow over the conflict between Israel and Palestine, describing it as “a human tragedy.”

In related developments, Macklemore claimed Sheeran informed him that Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots, had influenced stadium owners against allowing Macklemore to perform. Allegedly, venues gave an ultimatum: “If Macklemore stays on the tour, you will not be allowed to play in our venues.”
