During Game 3 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden, two videos emerged offering contrasting views on the atmosphere among fans for the matchup between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs. President Donald Trump, known for his lifelong support of the Knicks, faced criticism for allegedly politicizing the event and complicating logistics for fans with heightened security measures.
Fans had expressed concern about Trump’s attendance, cautioning that he was not welcome at the game. Despite this, opinions on the crowd’s sentiment toward Trump were divided, depending on the source of the information. During the national anthem, some attendees booed when Trump appeared on the arena’s screen from a private suite. Originally, it was expected that Trump would sit courtside, but due to security concerns from past assassination attempts, he watched from a glass-enclosed suite. This incident was widely shared by Trump’s critics to illustrate his unwelcomeness.
“Trump wasn’t welcome at the game and shouldn’t have attended.”
In contrast, a separate video captured chants of “USA!” resounding in the arena. These chants, familiar from Trump’s rallies, were highlighted by Fox News and his supporters as proof of patriotic support for the president. Debates arose on whether these chants were triggered by Trump’s presence or were simply expressions of general patriotic spirit. Commissioner Adam Silver defended Trump’s attendance, citing his history as a dedicated fan and emphasizing sports as a potential bridge for unity among Americans.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries questioned Trump’s decision to attend, suggesting he focus on more pressing issues like the economy. He expressed doubts about the reception Trump would receive and criticized the potential disruption of the city’s celebration after the Knicks’ long-awaited appearance in the Finals.
Heightened security led to extended entry times and blocked streets around the arena, with advice for fans to arrive early. This added inconvenience triggered dissatisfaction among fans and those intending to enjoy public watch parties, some of which were canceled due to security risks. Joanne Cadden, a Knicks fan, lamented the timing of Trump’s visit, voicing her frustration over the disruption.
“This night is for the fans,” Cadden stated.
Additionally, ticket prices exceeding $10,000 caused further discontent among Knicks fans. In response to queries about the exorbitant prices, Trump simply remarked that those unable to afford tickets could watch the game at home, emphasizing the nature of market dynamics.
