Typhoon Bavi Hits Guam and Northern Mariana Islands

On Monday, Super Typhoon Bavi struck Guam, forcing island-wide preparations. The powerful hurricane, classified as a Category 5 by the National Weather Service, went over Rota, one of the Northern Mariana Islands. As of early Monday afternoon, reports confirmed no fatalities or injuries in Guam or the Northern Mariana Islands.

Sunday night saw an island-wide power outage in Saipan, the Northern Marianas’ capital. The Commonwealth Utilities Corporation stated that the storm caused disruption to the electricity grid.

The Guam Power Authority reported that strong winds had damaged power lines, leading to outages, warning of further disruptions. Forecasting predicted 12 to 16 inches of rainfall in the region through Tuesday, with Rota expected to receive up to 20 inches. The region remains under a typhoon warning, a flood watch, and Rota experiences an extreme wind warning.

In response, authorities in Guam activated the highest level of a four-tier alert system and opened evacuation shelters. They restricted access to U.S. military facilities to ensure safety. As of Monday afternoon, all flights were canceled at major airports in Guam and the Northern Marianas, with several ports halting operations.

This area was still recovering from Typhoon Sinlaku, which inflicted considerable damage in April. Authorities continue to monitor and manage the situation actively.
