Fireworks Mishap at BMO Stadium During Angel City FC Celebration

On Friday night, a fireworks show at BMO Stadium took an unexpected turn when flares veered into the stands, forcing fans to seek safety. The event followed a match between Angel City FC and Orlando Pride, marking Angel City’s return from a month-long break with a 2-0 victory.

While the match was successful, the post-game fireworks display drew more attention. Videos depict the scene with large showers of sparks and thick smoke as fireworks launched high into the air. During the anticipated finale, some fireworks moved horizontally toward the half-filled stands.

Jade Greenhut, a season ticket-holder seated in the club section with friends, recorded the incident. Her video captured a missile heading toward the Angel City team bench. In the video, a woman’s voice shouts in alarm as several fireworks approached the stands, causing fans to move quickly to avoid harm. More fireworks skidded across the field, adding to the chaos.

A spokesperson for the team stated that there were no reports of serious injuries resulting from the wayward fireworks. Stephanie Rudnick, head of communications for Angel City FC, confirmed that the pyrotechnics were handled by a third-party vendor.

“A fireworks malfunction occurred during the post-match celebration at Angel City FC’s game against Orlando at BMO Stadium,” a team statement said. The team also mentioned that medical and safety teams were ready on-site. They assured that the venue was secured and everyone, including guests, staff, players, and crew, departed without harm. Ongoing collaboration with the pyrotechnics vendor aims to assess the incident and decide on subsequent actions.

Greenhut remained calm despite the incidents. She noted that due to the 20-minute break between the match and fireworks, many fans had already left, reducing injury risks. As the stadium was being cleared, her ticket ambassador approached to apologize, explaining prior successful fireworks events for the Los Angeles Football Club at the same venue.

“I don’t hold them responsible. The game was fantastic. We played exceptionally well,” said Greenhut. She proposed considering drones for future celebrations.
