A new military operation has been initiated along the U.S.-Mexico border, confirmed to Newsweek with hundreds of troops deployed to the Rio Grande area due to ongoing cartel violence. The U.S. Northern Command announced that Operation Unified Response aims to quickly bolster forces and federal agents in the Rio Grande Valley.

The operation is designed to enhance border security activities, improve the joint force’s capability to address threats, and support federal agencies working along the Rio Grande. A spokesperson stated, “Operation Unified Response will increase patrol capacity, strengthen key regions, provide additional monitoring and detection capabilities, and secure critical locations in support of the Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Customs and Border Protection.”

An increase in U.S. troop presence follows a reported shooting incident involving the U.S. Coast Guard close to Garceno, Texas. According to NewsNation, no injuries were reported during the incident. Newsweek contacted the Coast Guard, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and the Texas Military Department for additional comments.
