U.S. Moves to Secure Critical Supply Chains

On July 20, former President Donald Trump signed an executive order aimed at preventing U.S. defense contractors from purchasing essential minerals from China. This executive action is part of ongoing efforts to secure vital defense-related supply chains. The Pentagon is focusing on bolstering production within the U.S., ensuring that no foreign control compromises components essential for defense capabilities.

This supply chain scrutiny aligns with a broader strategy to stimulate U.S. economic growth through domestic manufacturing, reducing dependency on imports from unreliable sources. This movement supports the American workforce and strengthens national security.

We should continue partnering with allies, especially G7 nations, as long as production stays on American soil.

A recent partnership exemplifies this strategy. U.S. company ReconCraft and Ukraine’s Uforce have agreed to produce drone boats in Portland, Oregon. This initiative marks the first U.S. production of drone boats, aimed at enhancing the Pentagon’s capacity for autonomous weaponry. Earlier in July, U.S. drone boats exhibited their capability by targeting an Iranian submarine facility, showcasing their vital role in modern military operations.

The collaboration extends beyond manufacturing. The U.S. and Ukraine plan to share their warfighting strategies to deploy these boats efficiently. These strategies draw from Ukraine’s extensive experience countering Russian advances.

This approach also applies to the semiconductor supply chain, crucial for drone production. Last December, Sen. Marsha Blackburn, a Tennessee Republican, introduced the Chip EQUIP Act to address vulnerabilities. The act aims to prevent companies receiving CHIPS Act funding from buying semiconductors from nations like China, Russia, North Korea, and Iran.

Ensuring U.S. companies avoid sourcing from adversarial nations is crucial for our semiconductor supply chain security.

Senator Blackburn is well-acquainted with semiconductor supply issues, with the Wacker Polysilicon Plant, a major supplier, located in Tennessee.

Commendations are due to the former Trump administration for their persistent efforts in securing critical supply chains. As these measures evolve, Congress is encouraged to support these strategies to maintain military and national security integrity.
