The month-long series of attacks began on a July weekend, reaching from Moscow and St. Petersburg to cities in the south and as far east as the Ural Mountains. Unlike previous Ukrainian strikes on military and industrial targets, these assaults targeted warehouses vital to Russia’s online shopping infrastructure.
Ukrainian drones have significantly damaged the massive depots of Wildberries, Russia’s leading online retailer, destroying billions in merchandise. This strategic shift has brought the conflict into the everyday lives of Russians and posed new challenges to President Vladimir Putin more than four years after his full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
The Impact on Wildberries
The attacks have struck approximately 20 Wildberries facilities, shaking the empire built by Tatyana Kim, the wealthiest female entrepreneur in Russia, with a fortune of $8.1 billion. Countless individual sellers have lost their merchandise, causing significant disturbances across Russia’s economy.
Wildberries, dependent on massive loans from VTB and other banks, faces potential financial strain. This pressure could further destabilize Russia’s financial system.
Wildberries’ Origins and Growth
Founded in 2004 by Tatyana Kim in her Moscow apartment, Wildberries initially focused on clothing sales. The company later expanded into a diverse range of products, becoming a major player in the e-commerce industry across Russia’s 11 time zones. The platform, akin to Russia’s Amazon, serves between 500,000 to 800,000 sellers and adapted following the departure of Western brands.
Wildberries has also expanded into banking, tourism, and technology sectors.
Wildberries Under Attack
The strategic choice of Wildberries’ warehouses as targets stems from their vulnerability. Unlike smaller competitors, Wildberries relies on large warehouses to stockpile goods before distribution. These depots offered “soft targets” for Ukrainian drones.
Fires have decimated many of these facilities. Since an initial attack on July 18 in Elektrostal and a subsequent strike in Podolsk, seven out of Wildberries’ ten largest logistics centers have halted operations.
Ukraine’s Defense Ministry reported that around 20% of Wildberries’ warehouse space is compromised, with losses potentially reaching $6 billion. Despite defensive reinforcements, attacks persist.
Economic and Political Consequences
Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, explained that the attacks aim to disrupt military supplies, stir social unrest, and strain Russian financial establishments. Wildberries’ debts stood at around $15 billion at the end of 2025.
The broader impact hits Russia’s small and medium-sized businesses hard, exacerbated by recent tax hikes and regulatory challenges. Chris Weafer from Macro-Advisory Ltd. emphasized that these acts intend to undermine public confidence.
A recent policy change at Wildberries exempted the company from liability for damage caused by “force majeure” events like drone attacks. Kim offered support to sellers, including storage discounts and partial reimbursements. The Russian Central Bank asked lenders to restructure loans for affected businesses.
Broader Implications
These strikes bring the conflict closer to everyday Russians, affecting small businesses and consumers alike. The destruction of goods severely hampers businesses, prompting many to seek government aid.
Mark Galeotti from Mayak Intelligence highlighted Kyiv’s goal of introducing the war to Russia’s domestic front. However, this strategy may fuel anti-Ukrainian sentiment within Russia, potentially intensifying calls for military escalation.
Pro-Kremlin political expert Sergei Markov and former President Dmitry Medvedev both cautioned that these attacks could be seen as provocations that justify stronger Russian responses, potentially broadening the conflict.
