The United States men’s national soccer team is dealing with a major injury concern as they prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Chris Richards, considered one of the team’s top defenders, suffers from an ankle injury. This injury has prevented him from participating in Crystal Palace’s last two matches of the season, and there is currently no public timeline for his return.
Team manager Mauricio Pochettino noted that Richards remains at the USMNT training facility in Atlanta for rehab. This decision means Richards will miss the international friendly against Senegal, held in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Richards had to send a video message for the team’s roster reveal event in New York City. Despite being available, he did not participate in Crystal Palace’s European match in Germany.
Pochettino voiced uncertainty about Richards’ readiness for the upcoming match against Paraguay on June 12 in Los Angeles. He emphasized the importance of the next few days in determining Richards’ potential participation in the World Cup.
The team must finalize their 26-man World Cup roster by June, though FIFA allows for injury-related changes up to 24 hours before the first match. While Richards is unlikely to be removed from the roster, his absence could challenge the USMNT, given the lack of depth in the center-back position.
The USMNT will continue to hone their skills against Senegal and later face Germany in another pre-World Cup friendly before starting their Group D matches in Los Angeles. Following Paraguay, the team will play Australia in Seattle on June 19 and Türkiye in Inglewood on June 25.
The uncertainty surrounding Richards’ injury adds pressure to the U.S. team’s defensive lineup. His expected starting position underlines the need for clarity regarding his condition as the World Cup approaches.
